about To Catch A Thrift:

We love style, whether it’s fashion, art, home, or decor. We also live on very tight budgets, and believe that a tight budget should not restrict but rather magnify creativity.  We enjoy the challenge of finding and creating beautifully stylish things without breaking the bank! On this blog we show you how to style your life for less, currently posting at least twice a week – Monday and Friday – and hopefully even more frequently in the future! :)

Hello! Welcome to my little corner of the blogosphere. I’m so happy that you are reading this and want to know more about To Catch A Thrift! :)

Some facts about me:

  • I am  5′ 2″
  • 25 years old
  • married to my man Justin since September 19th of 2010
  • Live in Nashville, TN in a delightful neighborhood that I just love called Sylvan Park.
  • I’m an avid recycler, reuser, and thrifter (obviously!).
  • I’m a vegetarian (since October 2010).
  • naturally dirty blonde but obsessed with going lighter and lighter these days.

Q: How did you become so interested in thrifting?
A: I was fortunate to grow up in a very frugal, very “reduce, reuse, recycle” type of family. Hand-me-downs were pretty much my entire wardrobe. Lucky for me I had very unique cousins and an older sister who were teenagers in the eighties (aka GREAT CLOTHES!). As I got older I would go on regular “thrifting” trips with the ladies in my family, and I began to really appreciate the unique and individualized wardrobe I was accumulating. I think part of my draw towards it is that it is a form of recycling, so I saw it as a way of doing my part to preserve the environment, as well as a way to express my personal style. Additionally, I love that with thrifting, I have something unique that no one else has and that I get to recreate items and give them new life!

Q: What are some of your favorite activities or things?
A: I like: styling, traveling, shopping, costume design, cooking, reading, writing, organizing, conversing one-on-one, making gifts, hiking & camping, hosting dinner parties, playing games, watching movies, and learning. Yes, learning. I like to be learning something new all the time. Right now I’m teaching myself how to sew and how to draw. Next up is learning Spanish, i think. I also really love coffee and food. I like how they both bring people together.

Q: What is your favorite thrift store find?
A: One of my absolute favorite finds is an ivory blouse that I refashioned here and wore here. My very first thrift find (worth mentioning) was a Kate Spade messenger bag I found when I was 14 for $0.99! SO thrilling! But really I find something great almost every time I thrift, and have a home full of unique treasures to prove it!

If life were a coloring book, my pages might look something like this: crazy color combinations, added textures and patterns to objects and characters’ clothing, embellished backgrounds and settings to add depth for my outlined friends to dwell in, deep shading till my Crayolas are nothing but nubs, and all of this neatly inside the lines (for the most part).

I’d say that might be a good summary of myself. My niche is to find and bring out the potential in things. That’s why I love thrifting so much! I see objects and clothes that have been tossed aside and then with a little love and tweaking they’re given a whole new purpose!

Q: Other than thrifting, what are some of your other hobbies?
A: I love graphic design, painting, drawing, playing cards with my husband B, visiting my hometown, going to the pet store to pet the kittens (we’re not allowed to have one at my apt. boooo…) drinking coffee with my friends, board games, and a new found appreciation for an occasional pedicure!

Q: When did you start thrifting?
A: I’ve basically been thrifting my whole life. Being the youngest of three kids there was never a short supply of hand-me-downs coming my way. I was assembling my own elaborate/layered outfits by the time I was 4. I even loved finding my mom’s clothes from college and wore those all throughout high school. I thrift now because I just simply don’t get hand-me-downs anymore! ;)

Q: What is your favorite thrift store find?
A: My favorite kind of find is the kind that you forget even came from a thrift store just because you love it so much! I love my extensive thrifted belt collection, my black floral skirt/dress, and my ivory sheer blouse. All staples of my wardrobe now.
