It is officially layering season, folks! I love these days, where its warm enough during the day to get a little sun on your arms, but cool enough in the morning and evening to necessitate a cardigan, sweater, or jacket. I love layering, and if there is anything I love as much as layering, it’s mixing patterns and prints! Even if it wasn’t trendy, I’d still want to mix ‘n match, it’s just so fun to put together! So with my striped cardigan and leopard print scarf, I can say that this is my favorite fall outfit thus far. I’m wearing it today to celebrate that one year ago today we transferred our wordpress blog to a dot com. YIPEE!!

Here is the cost breakdown of my favorite fall outfit:

  • Thrifted J Crew Cardigan (Goodwill) - $4.50
  • Thrifted Faded Pink Sleeveless Shirt (Goodwill) -$2.25
  • Leopard Print Scarf (Francesca’s Collections - on sale) - $12.00
  • Black Cropped Skinny Jeans (a free pile) - $0.00/free
  • Dolce Vita Taupe Ankle Boots (Marshall’s)- $19.99

Total Cost of Outfit: $38.74!!

To celebrate a year of dot-com-ness, I’m going to take a little break! I think we all can use a little break now and then, so I’m going to take some time to contemplate changes and vision for this blog. Thank you all for reading and following thus far! Here’s to perfect fall weather…and to breaks!

Fall is here and I couldn’t be happier! I love everything that the change in the weather brings – the increase of apple cider intake, the fresh air and being able to breathe sans humidity, and being able to layer clothing! I have fallen in love with this sheer lace dress, my latest refashion i told you about last week. I was putting together thrifty outfits centered around the dress, and I just kept on coming up with cute combos! I have a feeling I’ll be wearing this a ton, but I spared you and am showing you just my two favorites ;) Spoiler alert: both of these outfits cost less than $29 each!

Here is the cost breakdown of outfit #1:

Total Cost of Outfit #1: $28.46!!

Here is the cost breakdown of outfit #2:

Total Cost of Outfit #2: $25.97!!

So cool, right? What do you think of these outfits? Which one is YOUR favorite?

Oh, this dress. I’m pretty sure its vintage, if not obvious from the dated style, but from the tags too. It’s a Jessica McClintock dress, whose (similar) dresses currently run anywhere from $45-$185, and I got it at Thriftsmart during one of their 50% off sales, so instead of $7.99, it was only $3.99! WIN!

I’ve had this dress in my “to-be-refashioned” pile for quite some time, not really sure what to do with it. The shoulder pads are HUGE, and the nearly floor length dress is comprised entirely of pink chiffon and white lace. It really can’t get much girlier. And it REALLY can’t be worn as is. First step was to take out the shoulder pads. Now, sometimes I like to leave shoulder pads in, to give a little shape, but these gave me the shape of a football player, so out they came!

Look how big they are!! Holy cow!!

After putting it on my dressform, I realized exactly what I wanted to do, and it was so easy, I can’t believe I waited so long to do it! All I did was cut off the bottom part – the fluted skirt – and hemmed the edge. Now I’ve got a tunic top/mini dress and a bunch of fabric that can be made into a ballerina-inspired skirt for the spring!

I can’t wait to show you how I styled it on Monday! Spoiler alert: there will be two different thrifty outfits to see! :)

happy weekend!

love statement jewelry. Love, love, love it! I first experimented with statement jewelry with these handmade and thrifted bracelet stacks. Still love them, still wear them! It’s safe to say I am now a huge believer in “accessories are what makes an outfit”, and statement necklaces are that belief personified with a “bigger is better” mantra.

A major trend for fall, statement necklaces are all over the place, and can cost you quite a few pennies (and then some!). I’ve been looking for a statement necklace that I would love (and would wear the heck out of), but never quite found one exactly like I would like. As the theme of this blog goes, why buy new when you can make/refashion/upcycle? So I decided that for my take on this fall trend I was going to make my very own statement necklace. I started with  this necklace base I got for free, shown on my DIY Necklace Display.

I dug through my jewelry “junk box” to find anything I could use. I found loads of silver chain, and several little silver beads. I cut varying styles of chain into 1″ pieces, and attached them to the necklace via jump rings.

I thought I might like to keep the silver disks on it, but one look in the mirror with the necklace on, and I knew they had to come off! As it was this necklace reminded me too much of the hip sashes people wear to Zumba. Not bashing them, I recently helped my mom decide on one to purchase, just saying I think they should stay on a hip and not on my neck :P .I kept on adding more and more chain until I liked the look and volume of the necklace.

I added rhinestones on a select few chains to throw in some glamor with all the edginess of the chains. And tada! My statement necklace.

I am so happy with how it turned out. I love trying and learning how to make things for myself, I feel like I end up liking the end product so much more than ones I buy from a store!

Do you plan on trying this fall trend?

Yes, the title wording is a reference to F.R.I.E.N.D.S, one of my favorite shows. I love to relax to the soothing familiar humor that I’ve heard and seen a bajillion times. And my sweet husband stayed up with me on our mini vacation to watch reruns. BLISS.

Our two-year anniversary was Wednesday, and to celebrate we took a one night vacation to Huntsville, AL. I LOVE road trips. Love ‘em! And a short one in the middle of the week was such a treat! I packed my “new” Andy Warhol screen print tote, filled up the car with gas, picked up some snacks and hit the road!

My sweet husband planned a fun-filled trip for us! As soon as we got there we went to Monaco Pictures theater to see The Words. The theater had something called the Prive experience, where you get to sit in high-back leather recliner loveseats, and purchase upscale concessions. They even had a wine tasting bar. How luxe! We went to a lovely Indian restaurant for dinner (we LOVE Indian), and then collapsed in our King-Size bed and watched the Property Brothers on our huge LCD TV.

The next morning was a day of SHOPPING! We hit up both a new retail shopping area and local thrift stores. We found a few things at h&m and I found my dream jacket from community and charity focused retailer Altar’d State. We then geeked out over the hot sauce sampling bar at our lunch spot, Lime. Next stop was The Ark Thrift Store, which is the special place I’ll be talking about for the rest of this post.

The Ark is a no-kill animal shelter, with an incredible thrift store attached to help provide funds for their operations. Our shopping experience at The Ark Thrift Store was one of the sweetest things that has ever happened to me. We pull up almost 45 minutes after they had closed. I go up to look at the hours (and to see some pretty little pups through the glass door), and sadly walk back to the car. I had heard amazing things about all the stuff they had and was looking forward to seeing it. I get into the passenger seat, when I look up and see a man coming out of the shelter and walking towards us. He informs us that the ladies who run the thrift store had left for the day, but he’d be glad to open it up for us to look around while he closes everything up. “I can only take cash since it’s closed, and the item has to have a sticker on it” were the only stipulations he gave us as he left us free to roam through the rows of treasures. and boy am I telling you did this place have some awesome stuff! Everything was super organized and clearly labeled too!

The nice man comes back, and he talks with Justin about how he used to live in Nashville too as I finish looking around. I found MANY things that I wanted to take home with me, but two that I absolutely had to have – an incredible vertical briefcase purse bag and a popcorn bowl set. Justin heads out to the car to grab our cash while I exude giddy-ness over my finds. Justin walks in and reminds me that we used all of our cash to get gas. This is where the story gets interesting. Justin asks the man if he can run to the store or gas station nearby and get some cash to bring back. The man says that just won’t work. My giddy grin rapidly fades as I know I’ll have to leave the items, I only have $3 in my pocket, and I needed $10. The man then tells us to take the items, and my $3, and bids us safe travels and a “come back soon”.

Yes, I’m serious. That happened. I think I just stared at him blankly for a moment, not knowing what to say (i’m not too comfortable receiving gifts or generosity). I couldn’t believe that a complete stranger would be so nice and so generous, and for no reason at all. He knew we had enough money to go take $10 out of an ATM, but he decided to bless us anyways.I am still floored at the gesture, and I was so happy walking back to the car it was all I could do to keep my eyes from welling with tears! We started the car and hit the road headed for home, but not before thanking God for generous people and praying for blessings and financial favor for The Ark. And we’ll go back again, this time with plenty of cash.

We took some pictured of my “new” items when we got home:

Remember that shirt? I told you I’d be wearing all the time! :P

Hello, there!

How was your weekend?  Mine was great! Got to see friends, get some work done, and (kind-of) clean my house (pinterest kept on distracting me!).

I finally wore the shirt (in the above picture) yesterday, it is such a bright and comfy find from Thriftsmart that I found while taking a friend thrifting for only $3.99! I have a feeling I’ll be wearing it ALOT.

So no awesome outfit or project to post today, just wanted to say “Hi!” and share a few updates, PLUS I am a little drained after putting together last week’s #denimweek. That’s right, we did a full week of posts all about denim! There was a cute and thrifty outfit, a helpful and informative refashion tutorial, and a fun and easy DIY craft! Doing a week of themed posts was so much fun that I want to do another one! Any ideas, suggestions or something YOU would like to see?

In other news:

  • We have a new background! Ellen designed it, what do you think?
  • We have an updated about page.
  • We have an updated blogroll page.
  • We have other cool updates coming soon!

Are you a fan on Facebook? Do you follow us on Twitter? We’ve started to use those platforms ALOT more, sharing things that we don’t necessarily post on the blog, so we’d love for you to be able to see those things too! We share smaller projects on facebook, and live tweet our thrift shopping experinces, among other things that you don’t want to miss!

Thanks for following with us! Oh, and if anyone knows of any good thrift stores in Huntsville, Alabama, I’ll be there this week and would love some leads on where is good to shop!

Remember earlier this summer when I made those DIY American Flag Shorts for myself and friends out of thrifted jeans from Goodwill? Well I saved all the cut offs, knowing that I would figure out something to do with them!

I thought how neat it would be to make a wine tote or wine bag with them. A couple weeks ago I came across this Design Sponge DIY tutorial on making wine totes with denim cut-offs! Great minds think alike! The words and pictures that follow are my take on the idea, so grab the bottom half of your denim cut-offs and follow along! (hopefully you saved them, if you didn’t go thrift a pair and make the top half next summer!)

Here’s what you need:

- jean leg bottom
- sturdy fabric of choice (for lining)
- scissors
- measuring tape
- pins
- thread
- sewing machine

take note: Make sure both your denim and liner fabric have been washed before you start sewing so the fabrics don’t shrink unevenly. I also ironed my lining because it was a little wrinkled.

Step 1: Cut open jean on the inside leg seam, If you look closely, you can see the seam unraveling a little bit from where you cut off the top half to make shorts. Cut along the seam so that you have an even, straight edge and so you keep as much fabric as possible (especially important the thinner or “skinnier” your pant legs are!)

Step 2: Cut a 14.5″ (width) x13″(heighth) rectangle of jean fabric, measuring the 13″ centered on the remaining vertical seam (this way when it is finished the seams on the tote will be even.

Step 3: Iron your liner fabric if necessary, then cut a 14.5″ (width) x15″ (height) rectangle of your liner fabric.

Step 4: This step is all about making some creases in the lining, so grab your iron! With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, fold the lining down about 1/4″ and iron to hold in place/create a crease.

Now fold the lining over again, this time at 1 1/2″, and iron it down to create the crease.

Step 5: Place jean fabric on top of the lining fabric, so that the wrong sides of both fabrics are now together and so that the seam where the leghole was is next to the 1 1/2″ crease. (look at picture if you are confused ;P ).

Step 6: Fold lining over denim and stitch down. I am using a Denim Heavy Duty Thread by Coats & Clark, but you can use a fun color if you want! Also, any stitch is fine, I’m going to do a zig-zag stitch because I think they are fun!

Step 7: Fold rectangle in half with lining on the inside. Finish side first, and then the bottom using a French seam. Read how HERE!

Step 8
: Cut a 2.5″x 15″ piece of fabric. Fold in each side of the fabric strip 1/4″, and iron to form a crease.

(If your fabric is not very sturdy, then I would suggest wrapping it around a 1/2″ strip of excess denim. That’s what I did. )

Now fold to where the sides overlap in the middle, then sew down that middle with a zig zag or straight stitch.

Step 9: Sew handle to the bag in to places: First to the stitch line when you sewed the lining to the denim, and secondly to the top edge of the bag. This way it will be very sturdy.

Step 10: Enjoy, and maybe even make some for your friends…these make great gifts!

It’s #DENIMWEEK !!! We started with a refashion tutorial, and today is all about my thrifted denim outfit.

I love denim. Denim jeans, shirts, jackets, vests, I love it all and I’ve thrifted multiple of each. Perhaps I should have styled several outfits with all the denim pieces I’ve thrifted over the years. Instead I thought “what says ‘I love denim’ more than a head-to-toe denim outfit?

I got this denim shirt on my latest #FridayFinds adventure! I actually went in to find a long sleeve denim shirt because I wanted a new one (my old one is a little snug), and ended up finding soooo much more!

I am also so very happy with these jeans. They were given to a friend of mine for free, and she gave them to me for free. They fit perfectly. AND they are J Brand, which means they are made well and will last me a long, long, long, long time! YAY!

I really liked wearing this all-denim outfit! It’s definitely a little different, but I think adding my black skinny belt and some red lipstick kept me from looking too “down on the farm”. Apparently my husband liked this outfit on me too – he came home, took one look at me and quickly asked “Can I take you out?” To which I replied “Of course babe, but can you take some pictures of me first?” HA!

He is so kind to oblige me, though he did keep on making me laugh, so much so that in 90% of the pictures I’m either cute laughing or mid-laugh to where my face looks contorted. These are the better of them :P

Here is the cost breakdown of my outfit:

  • Thrifted Christopher & Banks LS Denim Shirt - $4.49
  • Thrifted black skinny belt-$0.50
  • J Brand Boot Cut Jeans – Free/Gift
  • (Not seen) Black Suede Boots from JCPenney - $19.99;

Total Cost of Outfit: $24.98!!

I then tried to switch up my outfit by belting over the shirt at the waist.

I ended up wearing it the original way for our date! We decided to try some place new and checked out NY Pie over in Nashville West. It was DELICIOUS! We ate an entire 18″ pizza. Well, minus one slice. Then we met up with Ellen and her husband for some cheesecake and a movie!

What do you think about my all-denim outfit?

Hope you are having a great week and stay tuned for another denim post on Friday!

As a petite woman,(or heck, as a not-supermodel-tall woman) it is nearly impossible to find jeans that fit lengthwise. Jeans may fit me everywhere else perfectly, then I look down and realize they are up to 4-5  inches too long. WOAH! No can do!

I found a helpful pin on Pinterest that led me to a wonderful article on the Do It Yourself Divas blog on how to shorten jeans leaving the original hem intact.  This post is incredible and worth the time to read, but it only works with straight leg jeans.  I set out to figure how this could be done on Flare Leg Jeans (note: this also works on boot cut jeans, and wide leg pants).

So here, in words and pictures, is a step-by-step tutorial on how to shorten flared jeans. Here is what you will need: Pair of Jeans, Pins, Measuring Tape, Scissors, Denim Thread (it’s heavier duty), Denim Needles (for the machine, they are heavier duty as well), small scissors (for cutting threads), seam ripper (just in case! ;) )

Step 1: Measure how much length you would like to take off. Mark that spot with a pin. Measure the circumference of the pant leg at that spot.

ex. I wanted to take off 4 1/4″. The circumference of the my pant leg at that spot was 17″.

Step 2: Cut the original hem off at about an inch above the stitch line. The reason you do this is that a flared leg has more fabric circumference at the hem then at even just a few inches up the leg, so just folding up the cuff and stitching next to the hem line (as seen in many jeans shortening tutorials) would create a puckered look. This is because you are sewing different lengths of fabric together. So this is why you cut off the original hem of a flared leg jean and move to step 3…

Step 3: To the circumference measurement that you took in Step 1, take in the original hem you just cut off in Step 2.

ex. My leg cuff was 18″, so needed to take it in 1″. To do this I cut the cuff in two at the thinner/smaller of the two side seams. For the inch I needed removed I moved 1/2″ of that old seam, pinned one new end to the other new end, and with 1/2″ to the right side of the needle, stitched them right sides together. I finished with a flat fell seam.

Step 4: Back to your jeans. We are now going to reattach the original hem that we took in, in Step 3. Slide the original hem over the pant leg. Line up the stitching on the original hem with where you have pinned that you want your length I went along making sure I felt each pin head directly beneath my stitch line, then removed that pin and pinned the cuff to the pant.

Place pins going from raw edge to stitch line, this way they are easy to remove as you are stitching in the next step :) . Forgot to take a picture of this, but you’ll see how they are pinned in pictures for the next step!

Step 5: Stitch right next to the original hem all the way around the cuff, and be sure to keep the front and back sides separated, you don’t want to sew the leg hole shut!

To help I remove the removable section of the sewing machine base (you know, the part that holds your accessories in it?) and use the free arm to sew, keeping the cuff separated.

Step 6: You have a number of different options to finish off the pant leg. You can tuck up the excess fabric and press, but I personally feel like that’d be too bulky.

I trimmed off excess to a little less than 1/2″, and put a zigzag stitch at the end to prevent fraying. If you have a serger you could use that, I don’t (yet! ). Then flip original hem down and excess fabric up and press. Use Iron on the inside as heat on any synthetic fabrics in the denim will make them shiny.

Step 7: Repeat Steps 1-6 with the other pant leg, then you’re done! Hemmed Flared Jeans with the original hem intact!

Way to go!

Now you can finally do something with that stack of unwearable jeans!

Hope you enjoyed this refashion tutorial! We have more denim-related posts all this week! Follow us on Twitter to see updates about #denimweek!

I just love finding ways to use up scrap fabric. I had this scrap velvet leftover from making a photobooth curtain wall (legit, I know ;) ) and have been trying to figure out what I could do with it, when the inspiration hit me. TURBAN HEADBANDS!

I’m still coming around to wearing them myself (i’m very much a hair girl, like to let my mane show, no accessories needed), but I’ve liked them so much on other people that I decided to give them a try. AND I have in mind a couple of friends (and my sisters!) who would love to get them as gifts…I mean who doesn’t want a super cute DIY accessory that looks awesome and covers up bad hair days?!

I’m going to show you how to make two variations of Turban Headbands. The first one is a top-knot turban, and though I am going to use my sewing machine because my fabric frays, if your fabric doesn’t then this is a no-sew, quick and easy project! The second one is a cinched turban, and it does involve sewing. The good news is, neither of these are difficult, and I have step-by-step instructions and photos to guide you!

Disclaimer: I made these tutorials after trying one of the wonderful tutorials on one of my favorite blogs, Cotton & Curls, but made some small, some significant changes when writing this tutorial to make them work with my fabric and to fit how I like. If  you’d like to see even more unique styles of DIY turbans, check out Lizzie of Cotton & Curls great blog post on them here.

Step 1: Measure the circumference of your head.  Essentially – measure where you would be wearing the turban, which may be obvious, but in case someone measured directly around their head and ended up with a turban that didn’t fit, I’m going to spell it out. (Hey, that’d be a mistake I would make so…)You’ll want to measure from the top of your head right above your forehead, around the base of your head and back to the top. Now add 8″ total (4″ on each end-to tie the knot with) to that head measurement. This is the number you’ll need to cut in Step 2.

Step 2: If you have a fabric that doesn’t fray, for this step you simply cut out a shape that looks like the pictures below:

Step 2 (continued): If you have a fabric that frays, cut out TWO  of those shapes, place them right sides together and pin in place. Now stitch around the outside, leaving one end open to pull it right-side-out. (a loop turner comes in handy with creating any tube – scarf, purse strap, spaghetti strap – and can be purchased at your local fabric and crafts store for typically $4.50 or less! I used a loop turner, but you could also use like a knitting needle or something to push it through!)

Step 3: Tie a knot with the ends. I used a typical knot, but feel free to get creative with it!.

(Optional) Step 4: Skip this step if you’d like the ends of the knot exposed (no-sew project) OR you can tack them down. I did (hand-sewing project). To tack you are simply sewing a few stitches to hold it in place. Easy enough to do with just a needle and thread!

Pssst – on my first one I tried I forgot to add length to my head measurement to be able to tie the knot, so my turban was too short. I grieved for the slightest moment and then to turn my frown upside down I tacked the ends together and hot glued an old earring onto the center. I see a gypsy or fortune teller costume in the future :P

But hey, that’s me, trying to make the best out of my mistakes. On to the next!

Step 1: Cut the fabric into a rectangle, with the length being the circumference of your head + 1″ for seam allowance (you’ll see why soon!) and the width being whatever measurement you desire X 2, because you’ll be folding it in half and stitching to create a tube, thus decreasing the width by two.

Also, cut a 5″ by 5″ piece of fabric to be the cinching part.

Step 2: Fold the big piece of fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides together. Stitch along the open side to create a tube. Then turn it right side out. If your fabric slides a bit, it may be helpful to pin in together, like I did.

Step 3: Fold the 5″ by 5″ piece over so that it is a rectangle with the right sides of the fabric together. Stitch down one side, creating a tube. Then flip right-side-out.

Step 4: Fold the fabric from Step 3 over again and make sure the seam you created last step is on the outside. Then you stitch down the side, creating another loop. When you flip this right side out, the seam from Step 3 will be on the inside, and the seam from this step will be in the back, leaving a crease/seam free front! :)

Step 5: Slide the small tube onto the big tube you made in step 2.

Step 6: Sew the ends of the big tube together. Don’t forget to put the small tube on first (Step 5). Trim any excess down to ~1/4″, then slide the small loop over that seam to cover it up.

Step 7: Tack the small tube to the big tube in several places, making it secure (don’t want any messy seams exposed on our beautiful new turban, do we?!). And, done!

Okay, so, I am really liking these things! I got so excited about them that I started googling other things to wear on your head! I was inspired by this Man Repeller blog post and this Riann Star video, which led to me tying an old thrifted scarf around my head and trying to make my leopard print infinity scarf into a turban.

Gotta say, I am now IN LOVE with these things!

Hope you found this inspiring and informative, let me know if you give it a try!

happy weekend!

It is now September 3rd and I am unashamedly dressing like it is 20 degrees cooler than it is. What can I say? I LOVE FALL.  I love the cooler weather, the layers, the cider, the soup, the bonfires! I am especially ready for the fall this year as it has been so darn hot! Geez, global warming much?

If you’ve been following us for a while, you may have seen this post I wrote on “Planning Your Spring Look”. I got such good feedback on it through email and real life, so I decided to post pictures of the process again as I planned my “fall look”.

You may be asking yourself, ‘why plan a “look”, what is the purpose’? That is a great question, and here is my answer. If you are anything like me, getting completely overwhelmed by fashion magazines, blogs, and Pinterest happens every time the seasons change. Fashion seems so complicated!

Here is my summary of fall fashion: Literally every conceivable clothing concept (say that 10 times fast!) was seen on the runway: Equestrian, Futuristic, Minimalist, Baroque Opulence, Dark Romance, Edwardian, Militaristic, Oriental and more. Shape, volume, size, hue – everything seems exaggerated, like the world is a stage and instead of clothing we’ve taken to costumes (Not that I mind, I love playing dress-up!). Leather and Fur are everywhere in patches and colors. Mixing patterns and textures is very current, bonus points for incorporating digital prints. Sheer, Lace, and Red are still in, but while feminine silhouettes dominated spring style, the name of the game is pants for fall, and the more unique the better. Oh and if you can manage to pull off a chunky knit grandpa sweater with a super feminine skirt you have won the 2012 fall fashion game. Whew! Got all that down? Yeah, me neither.

While fashion is a bit complicated, style is not. The days of having to live by rules has long gone, and now the most stylish are known for taking a little bit of this trend and a little bit of that one, and making it their own. So these days you can wear whatever you want! Sounds great, right?

That is, until you have to decide what you want, and then make that fit into a budget. Yikes! Option overload!  That’s why I’ve found it helpful to do the following:

How To Plan Your Fall Look in 6 easy steps:

1. Keep in mind the clothing you have, anything new you purchase you’ll want to be able to incorporate into your current wardrobe. You don’t want to be spending your life’s savings here. (Well maybe you do, but if so I don’t know why you are reading a “thrifty” blog :P )

2. Time to get inspired! Browse websites, fashion blogs, and lookbook. If you favor the old school like me, grab a stack of magazines and catalogs, and get to clipping! Any outfit, hairstyle, makeup, color scheme, or item you find inspiring, cut it out!

3. Go through the images you’ve collected and try to narrow them down to a “look” that fits both your personality and your lifestyle. There is nothing worse than wearing something you don’t feel is “you” or you don’t feel confident in. The outfits you choose should be a reflection of who you are, and should let your incredible personality shine through!

This fall I’m going for an edgy sophisticated style. I’ll be looking to incorporate the following trends: The new neutral color - Oxblood (really, fashion world, love the color but the name is so gross!), leopard print, patterned pants, metallic, shimmer, lots of black, and some leather accents.

can you tell I am LOVING red lips? :P

4. Pin your images to a corkboard or similar backing. You can then display this wherever you would like to inspire you each morning (and when you shop for new things, you can keep this board in mind)! You can make as many boards as you like! I have one for my outfit inspiration, and one for my jewelry and makeup inspiration. The latter I modpodged onto an old cardboard box and displayed on my jewelry and makeup table.

5. The final step is making a shopping list of the items needed to complete your “look”. If it is more than you can afford ( and let’s be honest, it’s probable that it will be), prioritize your list. For instance, high up on my list are leather patched leggings, shimmer skinnies, and a good fall jacket. A little lower on the list is a studded blouse and a new handbag.

6. Shop for the items you can get, then have fun getting dressed each day! Of course, I start off by scouring thrift stores for items that I want or ones that I could refashion into something on my list. Then I hit up retail favorites to get the rest I can afford ;)

Hope you found this helpful! I enjoyed writing it while drinking the last of the coffee I have in my house. I have GOT to get to the grocery store ASAP. No coffee is not good around here. ;)

Happy FALL!

So I had the great intention of refashioning these baggy Ann Taylor pants I thrifted for $4 into skinny trousers. Seems easy, right? Step 1 was having the pants, and all I had to do was:

Step 2: Put them on inside out.

Step 3: Pinching the pant leg on the inside and out and marking how far you want to take them in.

Step 4: Pull fabric tight to keep from bunching and pin in place.

Step 5: Stitch along the pants (starting with the inseam first, beginning at the crotch and going down) where they are marked.

Step 6: Cut off excess fabric and press seams open.

Step 7: Have a new pair of skinny trousers.

Right?

Well, wrong in my case.

So let me begin by telling you how, ironically, Ellen and I had been talking earlier this week about how we fancy ourselves very open and vulnerable people, but how in reality we are very closed off and afraid of failure/disappointing others/what other people think, etc. I then realized how that has carried over into this blog, because I don’t want anyone reading to know that I am worried about what they think, and I want to give the impression that I always know what I’m doing and I’m awesome at everything I try to do the first time I do it. Reading that typed I realize how ridiculous and unattainable that is. Right?

So I’m just going to be very real and very honest. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes I fail miserably. Like with these pants. I can’t even get them over my ankles. It’s kind of comical, really! They look like I made them for a stick figure!

I grossly miscalculated and messed up what should have been a really simple project.

(If you want to know how to slim your pants, read this blog post and watch this video by the lovely Lizzie of Cotton & Curls.)

I was so bummed and was scrambling to think of what I could post this week instead, if I had time to do another project that looked perfect and I could post for all of you dear readers to enjoy. After  despairing that I didn’t have any projects that I could do well in such a short time, I decided to post this one anyways.

So there you have it. Sometimes I mess up royally, and I guess this post is my way of trying to accept that I’m not perfect. By telling the world. Yikes!

Though I’m sure her confidence in me is a little bit shaken, my sister offered up a pair of her pants to me so I could try this refashion again.

Here’s hoping I do better, and if not, well, I’m not perfect, I’m definitely still learning, and that’s okay. Right?

Right.

When it comes to holding on to sentimental trinkets, tickets stubs, pictures, etc… I, Ellen, am a pro. Sometimes there are just some things you’re not quite ready to part with yet, but what do you do with them? Mine usually end up in a shoebox of some sort and become an unfortunate eye-sore.

Since I’m aware of my “sentimental” tendencies, I usually keep an eye out for good “catch-all” boxes. One of my new favorites happens to be the Bare Minerals starter kit box! Random I know, but so good! It’s a unique shape yet very sturdy!

Giving a simple, mundane object a makeover can make the biggest difference! Like Ashley’s DIY jewelry stand!

What you’ll need:

  • Make-up box
  • Adhesive craft paper
(feels like fabric but is used like paper! At Hobby Lobby for $2.99)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Exacto Knife
  • Gaff Tape

Let’s “Get Started” ha!
Start with your box (dust off any access dirt/make-up)

Peel off the back of adhesive paper

Align paper edge with side of box lid

Press together and crease edges for smooth finish

Continue to press and smooth!

Use your exacto knife for nice & clean trimmed edges!

Here comes the tricky part….the corners!
Take your scissors and snip a small/skinny triangle out of the paper, right where the corner of the box is.

This will give you “flaps” for each side of the box that you then simply fold down and over each other!
(TIP! Use the glue to for extra staying power for the edges, especially if you know you’re box will be getting lots of use!)

Now for the bottom part.
If you don’t feel like busting out your paints and giving it a fresh coat of color, you can go the express route like I did and use Gaff Tape!
It’s sturdy production tape that is used to tape cords down and such. It has a nice textile feel to it that was similar to my craft paper so I thought I’d give it a try!
Shh…don’t tell my husband I used his tape!

Wrap it in nice even rows! So easy!

And now you have an adorable & new catch-all box, a newly decorated make-up box, a new pencil box for back to school, a great little gift box…really, the options are endless! All it takes is a little time and resourcefulness!

Go Be Crafty!

I am the very happy wearer of a brand new pair of pants! These red skinny jeans are so beautifully vibrant, and I even “cropped” them myself!

go to our Facebook Page where I showed you how easy this was to do!

Now, as happy as I am about these red pants, I am even happier about my new roommate!

My sister Nicole (who took all of these pictures for me, thanks by the way!) just returned from living in Ecuador for a year (you can read about her adventures here), and is living at the house with J and I for awhile. I absolutely LOVE having her around. She is thoughtful, observant, and so sweet. Our tastes and preferences are uncannily similar, and we love to do most of the same things! For example, she is a thrift store junkie like me! The bonus of having her here is the easy access I have to her wardrobe. All of the items she’s thrifted over the years are of course of particular interest, like this pretty sheer top she got at Park Avenue Thrift in Memphis for only two dollars!  Don’t you just love the print?!

After we’d eaten at Taco Mamacita, (one of my favorite restaurants, as it has an extensive Vegan menu and a Gluten-Free one too! Kudos!) We went exploring in the mall area of Edgehill Village which houses so many interesting and unique shops!

This is why I love having Nicole take my blog pictures. She tells me to stand on a table, and after shrugging (and a little whimpering…I was in heels, folks!) I reluctantly climb on up, and what do you know end up loving the picture! This pose is what I call my “I’m-so-chill-right-now-because-I-hardly-spent-any-money-on-this-killer-outfit” pose. :P

Here is the cost breakdown of my outfit:

  • Thrifted Multi Color Sheer Blouse - $2.00
  • Thrifted bracelet cuff -$2.00
  • Red Skinny Jeans from TJ Maxx - $20.00
  • Nine West Gold Shoes from Marti & Liz - $13.00;

Total Cost of Outfit: $37.00!!

I am loving the colored denim trend. Between these red ones and my mint green ones I wore here, I may not be wearing many other bottoms for a bit! ;)

Do you like to wear colored jeans?

This past weekend my sister and I went out to our cousin’s house to have a “craft day”! They had bought us these white sneakers from Target (only $12.99!), the perfect blank canvases for some creative girls to have fun with! We quickly set up our supplies and got to crafting!

All you’ll need for this project are:

  • paint
  • paintbrushes
  • q-tips (for quickly fixing mess ups!)
  • pencils
  • paper towels
  • jars of water
  • old newspaper to cover the work surface
  • canvas sneakers

We found it easiest to draw in pencil the design you want first, then that way you can just paint inside the lines.

This project was so much fun, and didn’t take much time at all! All four of us ended up doing a little bit different of a design. We had black-and-grey chevron print, multi-color skinny chevron print, different patterns on each shoe, and glitter and initials show up on our shoes!

Such a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

What would you paint on your shoes?

Ashley must be the most celebrated Birtdhay-ee of all time. She has had  1, 2, THREE  posts in a row about her birthday! Way to go Ash!

SO, I told you last Monday I’d let you know what she got gift-wise for her big birthday bash… here it is!

Ashley and I both just have an understanding that when it comes to any sort of gift giving occasion (Birthday, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, etc…) that gifts between us MUST be handmade. Again, never spoken out loud…just understood! I think we just both love the idea of not only giving something out of love but investing the time and energy into making it as well to make sure they don’t miss the point! You’re loved OKAY!?

I wanted my gift to Ashley to be something that would make her smile and also have a sentimental quality to it. She and her husband, J, have been gradually building a work studio for her in the back of her house. Fresh paint, new lighting, new furniture, the works! So my thought, was to make her something to hang in her new studio that would inspire her creativity!

The result? A stitched/ stretched canvas made out of scrap materials of our past thrifted TCAT projects that spells out “LOVE” to remind her that this is what she loves to do and that she’s great at it. Awww… :)

Here’s how I did it:

  • Gather your favorite scrap materials (some for the letters and one larger piece for the background) They can be mix-matched or all uniform, whichever way you’d like! Press with iron so it’s nice and flat!

(You’l also need, a sewing machine, scissors, newspaper, a marker, a canvas, pins, staple gun, and ribbon)

  • Start by drawing on some newspaper and cut out your word of choice. In this case L O V E. Using newspaper as a pattern works great for lots of projects! It’s nice and light like real sewing pattern paper and is usually free! woo hoo!
  • Now take your newspattern (new word!!!) letters and pin on to scrap fabric.
  • Cut out!
  • Lay them out on the larger piece and decide exactly how you want them, then pin into place!
  • Dust off the old sewing machine and start a-stitchin’!  I left my ends nice and frayed to keep the nostalgic “scrap” feel about it.

  • Next, pull out that old canvas painting from freshmen year that you’re not so proud of and give it a new purpose! Cover it up!
  • Use that staple gun to secure it into place.

(p.s.- if you don’t already have a staple gun…get one….they’re such a good investment! especially if you like to cover chairs as much as I do!)

  • Next, flip it over and grab that coordinating scrap ribbon you have (I cut mine in half length-wise so it would be skinnier) and attach to the edges. Staple gun OR hot glue if you prefer!
And that my friends is IT!

Voila!  A Beautifully handmade craft with sentimental memories too!

QUIZ: Can you name the previous TCAT projects that some of the materials are from? Bet you can!
These might help…. HINT HINT HINT

BONUS PROJECT

Ever heard of a Lavender Sachet?

It’s basically a little pillow filled with dried lavender buds that smell AMAZING!!!!!!! (they were leftover from my wedding) You can put them in your closet to make your clothes smell good, or use them to nap with for a relaxing scent to waft you off to dream land.

And if there’s two things I know about Ashley, it’s 1.) She loves butterflies and 2.) She’s a major NAP-oholic

Here’s how you combine the two to get a cute and cozy Lavender Sachet:

  • Get scrap fabric from your amazing thrifted finds, sewing machine, lavender buds and go!
  • Sew butterfly out of scraps. I used shoulder pads as wings!!! Complete artistic freedom here… nothing is wrong!
  • Attach your butterfly onto one side of fabric for sachet
  • With fabric “wrong side out” stitch together a small square and leave 2 inch opening at the end.
  • Turn sachet right side out and pour lavender buds in! (roll a piece of paper to make a funnel!)
  • Stitch close your opening and you’re done!!! It smells amazing and will be sooooo relaxing come nap time!

And that’s how you handmake a couple inexpensive (yet rich in love) gifts for your friends!

I’ll let you in on a secret though….Ashley actually got something else for her birthday… and it was…dare I say, “Store-bought” eek! It was totally worth it though! She got a new sewing dress form!!!! It’s super nice and is going to be so handy for all of her new thrifting projects!!! I think we feel about the new dress form like the Mythbusters must feel about their crash dummy, Buster. They’d make a cute couple…

p.s. if you’d like to help name the dress from, hop on over to our Facebook Page and tell us your suggestion!

I believe that’s all for Ashley’s Birthday post. We had a lot to cover with all the great stuff going on! Glad we got to share! Let us know what your favorite part of Ashley’s Birthday Soiree was!

Price breakdown…. literally completely FREE with leftovers from previous projects. Except for the dress form which was found on amazon.com.

I was so excited this year for my birthday. My besties and my hubby J had been plotting for weeks! I knew it was going to be fun, but boy I had no idea!! All I was told was that I would be busy on both Sunday the 29th, and Monday the 30th (my actual birthday). Oh, and I was told to dress up for the Sunday events.

Now, the sad story is that I had bought a pair of high-waisted harem pants from Goodwill for $1.99, and had this amazing outfit centered around them planned. Sunday comes, and I had yet to try on my outfit to make sure it “worked”. Alas, the pants were just too snug to fit comfortably. One minor freak out session and one call to the old roomies later, and I was on my way to their house to find some alternative options. Funny how things ALWAYS work out, I ended up loving my outfit EVEN MORE!!

For my Birthday Soiree on Sunday, I wore the outfit
on the LEFT side of this post. The shirt I thrifted from
Thriftsmart and then refashioned, which I showed you
how to do here and wore with other thrifted and
handmade items here. (Obviously, I am LOVING this top!)
The floral skirt was borrowed as were the earrings, the
bracelets were handmade and thrifted (~$7 for all of them)
and the gold glitter heels were only $8.50 at Target!!!!

On my actual day of birth, I slept in and then was picked up
by my best friends for a day of surprises! We went to breakfast
at The Perch-Green Hills, got pedicures  at  Venetian Nail Spa,
then went to lunch at Wild Ginger with a few other dear friends!
Such a fun day, and as you’ll see on the RIGHT side of this post,
I got to wear my new mint jeans from ModCloth which was my
much anticipated birthday gift from the hubs. I also wore this deep
faded pink sleeveless shirt from Goodwill,  My favorite necklace
from Francesca’s Collections, thrifted earrings and bangle that cost
$1.99 and $0.99 respectively, and leopard kitten heels that
disappeared mysteriously from my old roomies closet months ago…;)

Don’t you just love birthdays, and the chance to dress up? I wonder what outfit I’ll come up with next year? What do you like to wear on your special day?

As some of you may have heard….a week ago today was (our very own) lovely Ms. Ashley’s birthday! If you think she was great as a 24 year old….you should see her at 25! She’s awesome!!

So, a few of us Ashley fans decided to pull together and throw a birthday soiree for Ashley. Our theme?

A NEW YORK ROOFTOP NIGHT OF GLAMOUR! Our inspiration? The glamourous Ashley herself! Don’t let her humble upbringing fool you, this girl is HIGH CLASS!

With our theme in place….I started with an invitation to the party girl since she was the only one in the dark. Home-made with my beloved Adobe Illustrator! Stamped and sealed with stuff I already had at the house!

(As you can see, I kept it nice and ambiguous. We’re all about surprises here in ToCatchAThrift)

The vagueness of the invite helped buy me some time since we hadn’t quite locked down our location for the party yet! But, it was no time at all before our lovely upstairs landlord consented to let us use her amazing upper porch for our gig! She was actually thrilled!

My next move (and shame on me for not getting more “before” photos) was to make a trip my favorite local Goodwill and find a few necessities I would need for the soiree! First up, nothing says glamour like a white linen table cloth! I not only found one but it was even half off for the day! boo-ya! As for my centerpiece, I wanted to stick with our color scheme of Ash’s favs… teal and purple. I also knew I wanted it to be an arrangement of various shaped/sized flower vases that would be uniform when I paint them all the same color! (TEAL) Found the vases I wanted. Check. DIDN’T find the teal spray paint I wanted. Boo. Found instead an acrylic paint and spray sealer that worked splendidly!  Double Check! On the same thrift trip I happened to find a couple mini frame that would serve to accent our Guest of Honor and these adorable little tea cup/dessert plates that were…..drumroll…. TEAL! Perf! And here’s the result!

Is it “thrifty” if I just re-used something Ashley had already made??? Sure why not! Ashley had made these amazing tissue paper bon bons for my birthday tent which you can see if you click HERE!  She also handmade these ADORABLE heart and star garlands that were just too cute to NOT use again!

Recognize these chairs?!?! wink wink ;)

With the day of Ashley’s party upon us, our third amigo, Emily and I set out to gather all of our last touches! Balloons, fresh flowers, a cake, and a couple ingredients for some delicious cucumber mint water! (Bet you can’t guess what the ingredients were…)

Time for construction! All it took was a little faith, duct-tape, and pixie-dust! With all of our elements ready to go it actually came together in no time!

We also made sure to stay in constant contact with our head chef for the night (my husband B!) to make sure that we were on the same time frame. We have a schedule to stick to people! haha ;)

With the minutes counting down till Ashley arrived we were all busy!

B was cooking…

Emily and Steph were making signs…

And I was just too excited to operate.

Til finally….SURPRISE!!!! We got her good….

she hugged…she danced…she laughed…she ate…

everything was perfect. just like she deserves.

(NOTE: Ashley’s awesome outfit? Refashioned that blouse herself! Click to see how)

I won’t even go into describing all the food….because each course was amazing. That’s right… COURSES. He knows his stuff!

So as dusk fell, our evening became even more magical. She had cake, coffee, and even more surprises…but we’ll get into that LATER… stay tuned to find out what Ashley got for her birthday!

Happy Birthday, Ashley!

As always…Keep it thrifty!
Ellen

I posted on our Facebook page this picture of my packing process. My clothes were strewn about all over my bed, and the inside of my brain looked even more messy! I just couldn’t decide what I wanted to bring!!

My aim was to pack in a carry-on (to avoid a fee) for an 8-day vacation that included 2 days of seeing the city of Seattle, and 4 days on an Oregon mountain top walking trails and riding 4-wheelers. So obviously I needed to pack a variety of things that were appropriate for the occasions.

Once I started narrowing things down, it became so obvious how easy and simple this “packing light” thing could be!

I started with the things I knew I would need weather-wise (a sweater, a scarf) and the things I really wanted to bring to wear (my new maxi skirt). Next I wrote down what type of outfits I would need and began to pick out items that could be worn multiple ways. “I can wear my chambray shirt with my leggings AND my maxi skirt…”, “those tanks can go with my skinnies OR my cutoffs…” and “this tee can go with every pair of bottoms I have here…” are the right trains of thought to get that suitcase packed!

Another thing that I found to be helpful was to stick within a color scheme. This might happen naturally, as it did for me, but if not here’s what to do:

  1. Pick out your basics/base colors. (Mine were denim, black & white, and grey.)
  2. Then pick out accent colors (Mine were lavender and mint green)
  3. Then pick jewelry and accesories that go within that color family (I chose all cool toned, silver pieces)

This way you’ll have items that can all be mixed and matched, literally everything will coordinate nicely. And BONUS is you’ll end up packing waaaaay less. Take it from me, (I like to have loads of options and would relocate my closet when I travel if I could), THIS WORKS.

After my hours of deliberating and packing, I snapped a quick pic so that you could see how easy it is! Here’s what you need to pack to travel “light” but still be in style!

That’s it, folks! Here it is in list form ;)

  • SHOES: dressy heels, dressy flats, comfy flats, sandals
  • TOPS: chambray shirt, long sleeve tee, several tanks (I pack 3 ;) ), slouchy tee
  • BOTTOMS: maxi skirt or dress, colored skinnies, denim jeans, denim cutoffs, leggings
  • OTHER: sweater, scarf, accessories
  • Also, DON”T FORGET: plenty of underthings, travel size toiletries and cosmetics, hair needs, and chargers for your phone and computer!
As far as travel style goes, comfort of course is key. However I don’t like using that as an excuse to look like I just rolled out of bed. The perfect balance of “wow-I-feel-so-comfortable” and “I-look-good-and-feel-confident” is what I aim for when traveling!
For me, leggings + long tank + button up shirt or cardigan + scarf + minimal jewlery +comfy flats = ultimate comfort and style!
p.s. these are my “new” shoes from  Marti & Liz, which I love! :)

xo from Seattle, WA…keepin’ it thrifty, stylish, and “light”,

My week last week was crazy slammed with work stuff. You know the kind of week, where you just feel like a ginormous stress ball? Right? Well my husband J has learned by now that when I am feeling that way, the best thing to cure me is some quality time with him and ice cream.

Last week we went all out with this “stress relief tactic” with a date to Bobbie’s Dairy Dip. As the name implies this is a delightful place where you order at a window, sit outside on brightly painted tables, and listen to oldies over the speaker while you await your fried pickles or “James Brown” milkshake (a chai, chocolate, & coffee concoction, my fave!).

I wanted to wear the refashioned blouse I told you how to make here, and decided to pair it with an old thrifted pair of pink shorts, some “new” shoes from Marti & Liz, and a few touches of accessories, some handmade (by moi!) and some from Francesca’s Collections.

J and I had yet to eat dinner, so we decided to share a meal AND a large milkshake. As I went up to place my order, I was excited to find out that they have not one, but TWO veggie burger options! We got one of each, sweet potato fries, and the Barney Rubble milkshake – an ice cream, chocolate, oreo dream!

groovin’ to the oldies music ;)

Awwwwww. Aren’t we just adorable? ;)
This was such a great stress reliving break! It gave me the focus and energy I needed to finish all my work (3 days, 55 hours of working, 15 hours of sleep later…but I digress)!

When I get to working on a project I tend to zone and not be able to do anything else without thinking about how I need to be doing said project. For those of you who don’t already know, that is not the most effective way to work. As Strongbad once said (I LOVED those videos in high school…and college…and still go watch some for a laugh now and then)… “My focus is all crocus.”

When I, like Strongbad, feel that “my focus is all crocus”, I know it’s time for a break. Perhaps I should have titled this post “Peace & Ice Cream…and Strongbad”! HA!

I finished all my work (finally, thank goodness), and am now all about celebrating my BIRTHDAY!! (it’s today!)

I may have definitely worn this shirt AGAIN for my surprise party last night. I just like it so much! If YOU like it too, you can go to this post where I showed you how to make it!

Here is the cost breakdown of my outfit:

  • Thrifted Pink Old Navy Shorts - $1.99
  • Thrifted & Refashioned Cream Blouse -$3.99
  • Nine West Gold Shoes $12.99
  • Handmade Peace Signs and Mixed Metal Bead Bracelets - $5.99 (cost of supplies to make)
  • Francesca’s Collections Gold Rings - $0.99 (super markdown!)
  • Francesca’s Collections Brass Rose Earrings - $8.00

Total Cost of Outfit: $33.95!! Not bad for a cute and casual date night look!

What do you do to unwind / de-stress? And how often do you think it’d be good to do? (In my case, I’d like to have ice cream every week! ;P)

xo,

ashley
